Singer Katy Perry and British comedian Russell Brand were married on Saturday at a resort in northwestern India, according to an official.
The two were married in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony, conducted by a Hindu priest. The ceremony was attended by close friends and family, according to a hotel official.
Security was tight at the resort as well as surrounding hotels where guests and the couple are staying for the six-day wedding celebration.
The couple have given the exclusive coverage rights to a London magazine, and no other photographers or journalists were allowed into the resort.
The Ranthambhore National Park, where the luxury resort is located, is home to many wildlife species including tigers, leopards, wild boars, hyenas and sloth bears.
According to a district official, a committee was set up to check noise pollution from the wedding celebration and to ensure that animals in the wildlife reserve are not disturbed.
Friday, four news photographers were taking pictures of Brand in an Indian tiger reserve when one of the bodyguards came up to their jeep, punched their driver in the face and grab the vehicle’s keys.
AP photographer Mustafa Quraishi said he jumped out of the jeep to try to retrieve the keys, but the bodyguard punched him repeatedly.
Two other photographers came to his assistance, but the other bodyguard began hitting them, causing one to start bleeding from the head. None of the photographers, however, sought medical care.
Brand watched the assault, the photographers said.
Brand, 25, proposed to Perry, 26, in the historic Indian city of Jaipur over New Year’s Eve, and the couple decided to get married in India.
